The flow of money into Kingsport

Here is some numbers on money that flows into and around our area. As a local, state ,and federal tax payer this money comes from us. Imagine without this corporate welfare how much money we would retain.

Kingsport will receive a $1.5 million federal grant for the Kingsport Center for Higher Education, U.S. Sens. Lamar Alexander and Bob Corker and U.S. Rep. David Davis announced Friday.

HUD awarded nearly $500,000 to the Kingsport Housing & Redevelopment Authority in grants to assist senior citizens, disabled individuals and families living in public housing. HUD provided $250,000 to offer public housing residents greater access to education and employment, and another $250,000 to help elderly and disabled public housing residents to live independently.

NASHVILLE – Governor Phil Bredesen and Tennessee Department of Labor & Workforce Development Commissioner James Neeley have awarded $42,576 to Domtar Paper Company in Kingsport, Tenn. Incumbent Worker Training grants assist existing employers with training needs associated with skills upgrades for their employees. Over the past three years, Incumbent Worker Training grants have totaled more than $5.7 million to assist more than 22,000 employees.

Jennifer Rawls, Executive Director of thee Tennessee Economic Council on Women, Nashville, Tenn., has allotted KOSBE a grant of $4,000 to organize a regional women’s business event to take place before budgeted funds expire on June 30th.  TECW will award KOSBE a grant of $2,000 in 2009, with the understanding that the event will be self-sustained beginning with 2010.

The Alliance for Business and Training (AB&T) has received two Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) YouthBuild Grants for Kingsport and Washington/Carter Counties, Tennessee. YouthBuild was awarded $700,000 (Kingsport, TN) and $400,000 (Carter County, TN) these grants are designed to provide academic training and construction skills training to youth between, the ages of 18 and 24. Program participants will construct 6 new housing units for low income/homeless families. 

TN Arts Council of Greater Kingsport Zulu Connection $1,440.00

A grant in the amount of $250,000 has been awarded from the Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC). In addition to ARC funds, local sources will provide $250,000, bringing the total project funding to $500,000.

The state gives $23,000 to Downtown for the Tennessee Main Street Innovation Grant.

The Facade Grant Program $110,000 in funding.

Federal: The RCAM will also receive $1.9 million from the U.S. Department of Labor to pay for building equipment and scholarships.

Here are some items that were in the 2008-2009 budget.

  • City Manager got a 4% pay raise on July 1, 2008 plus his performance increase
  • Im sure this is just the tip of the money that comes into here in the past few years. Yet they wonder why our economic mess is such a problem.
