Tennessee Watchdog will be led by veteran investigative reporter and editor Clint Brewer. Brewer has led investigative reporting teams to award-winning work at daily newspapers in the state. He is a leading advocate nationally for a reporters’ federal Shield Law through his work with the Society of Professional Journalists.

“This website is unique in Tennessee,” Brewer said.  “It will serve Tennesseans by telling them what their governments are doing with their tax dollars, and whether they are acting as good stewards of our state’s resources,” Brewer said.

Tennessee Watchdog is one of a growing number of non-profit journalism sites across the country filling the gap left by shrinking resources in mainstream media newsrooms.

At the same time, Brewer said the website and its writers want to partner with both mainstream media organizations and citizen journalists to accomplish investigative reporting and watchdog journalism with real impact.

“Journalism is a changing field, and the non-profit component is increasingly becoming part of the topography, whether it’s through the efforts of dogged, determined citizen journalists or non-profit sites like ours,” Brewer said. “We want to contribute to the forward progress of Tennessee by letting the sun shine on government.

TCPR Executive Vice President Shaka Mitchell said the Tennessee Watchdog effort promises to grow, as freelance writers and citizen journalists are brought into the mix to broaden the website’s scope and appeal.

“We believe non-profit journalism is going to play a vital role in the continued health of our democracy,” Mitchell said. “We will tackle the stories others either will not or cannot. We will also seek to broaden our circles with Tennessee Watchdog and look for partners across the media spectrum.”

NASHVILLE – The Tennessee Center for Policy Research announced today the launch of its new non-profit watchdog journalism and investigative reporting website, www.TennesseeWatchdog.org.

The website will serve to inform Tennesseans about the workings of their governments, at the state, local and federal levels. The focus of the site’s coverage will be politicians, government waste and abuse, bureaucracy and regulatory issues.

The site launches today with special reports detailing political action committee giving in the Tennessee governor’s race, as well as the potential fall-out in the historical African American community of Fredonia over the West Tennessee megasite.
